Monty Balfour Paul
Lead Ground Crew Aeronautical Engineer
Monty grew up in the Scottish Highlands with nature at his feet, a motocross bike and a garage full of tools – there was always something to fix or somewhere new to explore. His love for mechanics and building things started from a young age where his father, Hughie, had a large garage with an array of tools and the knowledge to build “big boys’ toys” from beach buggies and off-road vehicles to planes and even a Bell 47 helicopter.
Leaving School at sixteen he headed to Australia and had his first job helping with helicopter maintenance in a small hanger on the Gold Coast. He then spent the next five years back in Scotland working as a Land Rover mechanic helping build custom vehicles, including the 6×6 Land Rover Defenders used for the movie The Expendables 3.
After graduating from a renowned collage of Aeronautical Engineering, Monty acquired a job as a helicopter engineer with a North Sea oil & gas helicopter operator. In the last five years this has taken him around the UK to multiple bases, his last location being in the Shetland Islands where he was helping maintain a fleet of Sikorsky S92s, a helicopter originally built for war and based on the famous Blackhawk.
He is now based on the Island of Borneo maintaining helicopters with a small team supporting the army in their jungle warfare training.
In his spare time, Monty enjoys Taekwon-do, fishing, building off-road trucks and taking tours of expedition vehicles to extremely remote locations around Scotland.
